Well this is the last time in my life that we will see the date numbers align so nicely…12/12/12…it must be a sign!
No, its not. Although its visually interesting to look at, only our feeble minds attach any sort of significance to the numbers. There is really nothing that special about it. As long as humans have been counting days, it was destined to eventually happen. Just like 11/11/11 happened last year and 10/10/10 the year before that. But since there are only 12 months, we will not get to see 13/13/13.
With that in mind, I’m getting a little tired of all the doomsday prediction that have happened even in my short lifespan. The next great date of earthly destruction is set for the 21st of this month, just 9 days from now, which just so happens to fall on the winter solstice. What a crock, the Earths 23.4 degree tilt on its axis is the only reason people really care about this day. So, why pay attention to the Mayan calendar b’ak’tun long count which is about to end. It must be significant because it took 394 solar years to complete…right?
Wrong. Its simply the day that the next cycle begins, no different than flipping our calendar over from December to January and adding 1 to the current year count. Education, its a good thing…..
“Misinterpretation of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is the basis for a popular belief that a cataclysm will take place on December 21, 2012. December 21, 2012 is simply the day that the calendar will go to the next b’ak’tun, at Long Count 22.214.171.124.0. The date on which the calendar will go to the next piktun (a complete series of 20 b’ak’tuns), at Long Count 126.96.36.199.0.0, will be on October 13, 4772.”
